David Levin's Final Project Documentation

When I was a young lad, my father gave me some advice that has serviced me to this day: "Boardgames are rot."
As I enjoyed boardgames very much at the time, my feelings were hurt by his opinion, and it was only many years later that it occurred to me that he in his own gruff way might have been trying to express a deeper and more meaningful sentiment that I could one day pass along to my son as maybe his father had to him but before I could ask him about it he was dead for 14yrs.
Reasoning it out, I remembered that he had displayed a fondness for Pong, and Pleadeis before he died so quite possibly what he had been trying to tell me was that the boardgames I enjoyed playing by myself would soon be as exciting as skiing, and horseback riding were in the age of motorcars.

Of course today boardgames are alive and well and even have been adopted as models for some computer games like Risk and Monopoly thereby proving my father wrong.

So I dedicate this finalproject to his memory as a way of finally saying, "Up yours"

Storyboard, Concept

I wanted to show a boardgame that depicted the grim details of reallife that would not ordinarily be found in a boardgame or that would be treated in a casual fashion. I also thought about using garrish colors to make contrast with serious nature of the game threats. As few lights as possible I thought would be best to add to the game's murkiness.

I used the book "Design Basics" for ideas regarding colors.

Here is the picture of the board that I created and then imported from Photoshop

As you can see, I wound up using as garrish a color scheme as I could stomach. The symbols were to be as basic as possible. Jolly Rodger for Death and money sign for money were obvious choices and I hoped the syringe looked psychedelic enough to suggest drug abuse. The McDonald's fries are either happiness or commerical globalization depending on your leanings.

One of the pawns is sort of sickly in color and the other two are gathered around to view its misfortune

This pawn is waiting to leave the security and happiness of McDonald's french fries for the dangers awaiting him "around" the board.

Here is a pawn that has died in the shadows of a drug overdose. It think in retrospect that this is the only shot in which the lighting works. The other one should have been more brightly lit to show off the obnoxiousness and flipancy of the color scheme.

The other movie files included are assignments from throughout the semester which have found a final resting place where they will hopefully be forgotten as I've already done for them. The DLblur was intentionally dark.
