The concept of this project came from a culmination of many things flying around my head this semester: life, robots, relationships, music, and concepts of the future. I wanted to create an environment that communicated some of the stuff that I find appealing at the moment, but also show the underlying tensity present at the moment in time, brought on by factors such as the recession and global climate.
The focal point of this particular scene is a subwoofer powered by heat threatening to break through its fiberglass shield; by heat I mean my personal preference in music, which is often minimal, lush, melodic, “weighty” music. The subwoofer itself is influenced by a picture I had seen via Google of what was coined "the world's largest subwoofer", and is ill positioned in the room between two pictures on the wall, one of the Sade album Love Deluxe (one of my favorites), and a picture of a Kraftwerk album from the 70's.
The robot present in the room is also a nod to the group, in a posture as if saying "why" and going through some dumb robot existential crisis. Kraftwerk, while known to many, is a group whose music I find highly relevant in current times.
Design-wise in viewing my own personal habits, I notice that in times of chaos I often default to the simplest approach and go with black. It is not necessarily a dark theme emotionally, it just presents a crisp and sleek image that I find appealing and motivating. The chair and sofa in the room are items I would definitely actually have in a room; the coffee table in particular is very similar to one that I own. There is also a helipad present in the room that is not visible, because I like helicopters because of their lateral movement. |
