I finished project three very excited and enthusiastic about the airplane that I had created, so I decided to elaborate on the airplane theme. At first I wanted the airplanes to be on a ship in the ocean, but putting a scene in the middle of the ocean is something I didn’t think I could make look realistic. Instead, I decided to have the planes in a hangar, and make it look like they were models inside a big box. I spent some time looking at airplane hangars and looking at how there were structured, and decided to make the shape out of a simple box. After doing some resizing and extruding, I changed the ceiling of the hangar to have more depth and make it seem a little more realistic. After building the hangar, I added landing gear to all the airplanes and added some other small characteristics to the scene.

I've loved planes since I was a little boy, and I've been to several different hangars in the past. This is why I decided to continue on with idea of using an airplane. I wanted to revolve a whole scene around them, and in the last project I wasn’t able to spend enough time working on the environment the plane was in.

The Maya scene ended up pretty nice. I worked with lighting a bunch, but only decided to keep it for the renders. When I was transferring over to Virtools, I wanted to learn how to use lighting in Virtools to light the scene instead of using baked textures and no lighting at all. The tools in Maya allowed me to exactly what I wanted to do, and it gave me enough confidence to continue on with my idea of building a hangar to house the airplanes in.

I think that Virtools does a good job of giving the viewer of sense of actually being inside of a box moving around a model airplane/hangar. I decided when I was working in Virtools that I wanted it to look a little different than it did in the renders--so I gave it a more rustic look. This Virtools piece is quite a step up compared to the last project, and the learning process was very exciting. I worked with lighting in Virtools to make the scene have more contrast and light. I think it turned out great.

I think a visitor will take a second look at this world because of the complexity of the aircrafts in the scene, now complete with landing gear and a new texture. However, I would like to add a lot more to the scene in the future including vegetation, more random objects found at hangars, and possibly even “toy” looking people to place around the environment. I think adding these factors will added to what is currently a pretty simple scene.
